The DOC Morellino was born in 1978, but the local wine tradition is very remote and certainly dates back to the Etruscan period. Already in the year 1813, the “Maiore del Comune di Scansano”, in a letter sent to the Deputy Prefect of the Grosseto district, declared that in the previous year 5,540 hl of wine were produced in the Scansano area, a part of which was of superior quality.

“The wines of Magliano di Pereta and Scansano are excellent and in few places wine is produced of such exquisite quality …”, states G. Barabino in a study on agricultural developments in the province of Grosseto dated 1884.

Since the 2007 harvest, Morellino has obtained the highest national recognition for a wine, the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin. a
